Two Reno, Nevada poker rooms have tied for gold in the inaugural Best of Reno contest’s Poker Room category.

Readers of USA Today subsidiaries Reno.com and the Reno Gazette-Journal named the poker rooms at Peppermill Resort Spa Casino and Grand Sierra Resort and Casino the best places to play poker in Reno. The Northern Nevada city of 245,000 is renowned for its casinos.

The inaugural Best of Reno contest began with a nomination period running May 15 to 26, 2017. Nearly 20,000 Reno.com and Reno Gazette-Journal readers cast more than 190,000 votes for their favorite people, places, and things. The voting took place from June 1 to 30, 2017.

Peppermill and Grand Sierra, which finished gold and silver in the Casino category, tied for gold in the Poker Room category. The poker room at the Atlantis Resort Casino Spa took the bronze award.

Changes help Peppermill run it up

According to Reno.com, recent changes at the Peppermill’s poker room helped push it to the top. The room recently redesigned and refurbished its nine-handed poker tables and chairs. Plus, a smoke-free ventilation system and self-serve food-and-drink area were added. The poker room at the Peppermill also features tableside food service, 24-hour action, and games range from $2-$4 to no limit.

The Peppermill’s poker room has also recently come to the attention of the larger poker community around the United States. Mostly due to it becoming the home of popular poker Twitch streamer Jason Somerville‘s Run It Up tournament series. The Run It Up series has a reputation for placing fun and community ahead of the competition, yet still managed to feature a combined prize pool of $506,985 throughout 16 events held at the Peppermill in April 2017.

The Peppermill Resort Spa Casino itself is a Tuscan-themed hotel and casino featuring more than 1,600 hotel rooms and 10 restaurants. The casino has more than 1,500 slot machines, 700 video poker games and a state-of-the-art race and sports book.

Consistency reigns at Grand Sierra

Meanwhile, the poker room at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino has long maintained its status as one of the best places to play in Reno. In fact, the room is a mainstay on the Casino Player Best of Gaming Best of Reno Best Place to Play Live Poker list.

The Grand Sierra poker room offers a free players’ buffet twice daily. There is a generous $2 per hour comp rate for live play. There is limit and no limit hold’em games. Plus, the poker room spreads a variety of mixed game action throughout the week. The poker room at Grand Sierra also runs a variety of poker promotions. This includes a progressive bad beat jackpot.

The Grand Sierra originally opened as the MGM Grand in 1978. After several name and ownership changes, it became the renamed Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in 2006.

The property features almost 2,000 hotel rooms, 10 restaurants, and an 80,000-square foot casino. In addition to the poker room, the casino features traditional and electronic table games, slots, and a sports book.
