WPT Announces Dates for World Championship, Popular Event Returning in December

After recently announcing the complete 2023 schedule, the World Poker Tour also announced the dates for the season-ending WPT World Championship on Tuesday.

The record-setting event returns to Wynn Las Vegas from Dec. 7-12 with the entire festival running Nov. 29 to Dec. 23. The inaugural championship at the Wynn was received well by players. That helped lead to winning the 2022 Event of the Year recently at the annual Global Poker Awards.

“The WPT World Championship festival was such an extraordinary milestone during our 20th season last year, thanks to our partner Wynn Las Vegas and the enthusiastic support of the players,” WPT CEO Adam Pliska said in a news release. “It is our hope that we have started a tradition in poker that we can enhance and add to each season. We look forward to making this year’s World Championship even more memorable for players.”

Previewing the WPT World Championship

December’s championship brought nice reviews among players. Many noted that the event seemed to fill a void on the tournament calendar and offered a World Series of Poker type of series during the winter.

In the buildup to the series, the WPT announced a massive $15 million guarantee for the championship. The event featured live and online qualifiers around the world as well as a packed schedule of side events.

The championship produced a field of 2,960 entries, nearly doubling the guarantee for a prize pool of more than $29 million.

Canada’s Eliot Hudon came out on top to win $4.1 million. England’s Benny Glaser finished runner-up for $2.8 million. Wynn tournament organizers are pleased to see the tournament series returning in December.

“After paying out more than $53 million in total prize money last December, we are excited for the return of the WPT World Championship at Wynn,” Wynn executive director of poker operations Ryan Beauregard said. “Due to last year’s incredible turnout and the strong rapport we built with WPT, we have extended the festival dates and will create a tournament schedule to make 2023 even more memorable.”

More event dates also released

So far, the WPT has released dates for five major events of the series. Beyond the championship, the WPT Prime Championship is once again returning to the property from Dec. 7-12. The WPT Ladies Championship is also back from Dec. 16-18

A Mystery Bounty tournament is scheduled for Dec. 18-21 with a seniors event also planned for December 6-8. A complete schedule will be announced in the coming months. Here’s a look at the schedule so far.
