Connecticut Online Casinos

Legal Connecticut online casinos became real as part of its massive gambling expansion in May 2021.

While the US Department of the Interior must still give the green light to the amending of the state’s compacts with its two Native American tribes, fans of slots like Divine Fortune and Starburst or table games like blackjack and roulette will soon have options no matter where they are in Connecticut.

Each of the two Native American tribes in Connecticut, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe, will hold one of the two online casino licenses. Each tribe has either already partnered or will partner with an online gambling provider to offer play to Connecticut residents.

The Mashantucket Pequots have an existing relationship with DraftKings already, so a full-service DraftKings Casino is all but certain. The Mohegans don’t have a partner yet, but either BetMGM or FanDuel seem most likely to reach a deal due to each company’s full-service offering of casino, sportsbook, and even real money online poker.

When Will Online Casinos Go Live in Connecticut?

Lawmakers in Connecticut have designated September 9, 2021 as the preferred launch date for sports betting in the state. That date is also the first day of the 2021 NFL season.

It is unlikely, though not impossible, that real money online casinos and poker will launch at the same time. A more reasonable timeframe for a launch would be early-to-mid 2022.

Once online casinos are live in Connecticut you will be able to sign up, deposit, play, and cash out your winnings without ever leaving home. Downloading an online casino app uses the same procedure as any other kind of app, no matter which type of device you use. It’s possible to sign up and start playing in less than five minutes.

If you’re wondering how to play casino games in Connecticut without getting into your car, see below for the latest information about Connecticut online casinos plus exclusive casino bonuses for new players.

Until real money online casinos in Connecticut are officially live, CT players can take advantage of bonus codes and sweeps cash casino games for cash prizes at social online casinos, such as LuckyLand Slots, Chumba Casino, and Funzpoints:

Connecticut Online Casino Apps

The thing to understand about online casinos in Connecticut is that most things flow through the two tribes in the state. As the owners of Foxwoods Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino, respectively, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe wield immense political power due to the tremendous tax contributions their casinos provide to the state budget.

Thus, no gambling expansion can take place without the tribes’ approval. That’s why the tribes are to be the sole purveyors of online casinos in the state. Even the Connecticut Lottery, which will offer sports betting, does not have such an opportunity.

Because of this limitation, the list for potential casino apps in Connecticut is quite short. Each tribe can partner with one casino company for the technological and operational aspects of the apps, and that’s it. Plans for a third casino in Bridgeport, which have been under development for several years, ground to a halt with the new agreement between the state and the two tribes.

So, two real money casino apps is probably all that Connecticut casino fans will ever have. But we have some idea about which brands they will be. Here are the online casino apps you can expect to see in Connecticut.

DraftKings Casino Connecticut

Chance of Connecticut launch: ALMOST CERTAIN

The debut of DraftKings Casino in Connecticut is only a matter of time. DraftKings already has a market access deal for online sports betting with the Mashantucket Pequots. The combination of both the company’s reputation as a top-notch gambling partner, the tribe’s familiarity with its personnel, and the fact that sports betting will have already served as a trial run for the duo before the online casino app launches make an expansion of the relationship an almost no-brainer.

DraftKings was originally known as a daily fantasy sports company, but it has grown to be a full-service gambling giant in the past few years. Its casino app is easy and intuitive to use. Furthermore, DraftKings is notable for its in-house development of games that you cannot find elsewhere.

In particular, you can find many different themes and variants of blackjack, roulette, and other table games. You will also find all the name brand slot games that you’ll find in live casinos, like Cleopatra, Monopoly, or Gonzo’s Quest.

BetMGM Casino Connecticut

Chance of Connecticut launch: PROBABLE

BetMGM Casino is probably the odds-on favorite to be the other casino app in Connecticut. BetMGM is a well-known brand and a fully-integrated app that would work well for the comprehensive service that the Mohegan Tribe would want.

Although BetMGM was doggedly pursuing a deal for a proposed third casino in Connecticut, its reputation for becoming the market leader for online casinos in New Jersey and online casinos in Michigan make it an attractive potential brand to represent the Mohegans.

What makes BetMGM such a popular casino app everywhere it goes is the sheer number of options it offers. There are hundreds of slot titles available for play – we didn’t count an exact number because there were simply too many. Likewise, the selection of table games is incredibly expansive and diverse.

You will also find several varieties of novelty games, like Slingo and The Voice, and even some virtual sports options. It would be hard to find another app that better embodies the notion of “something for everyone.”

FanDuel Casino Connecticut

Chance of Connecticut launch: POSSIBLE

FanDuel is a fantastic gambling brand with a top-notch offering. The fact that either it or BetMGM will be squeezed out of Connecticut highlights how troublesome the two-app limit on online casinos is. However, at the end of the day, FanDuel’s offering is probably a bit too sparse to win out over other brands for the attention of the Mohegans.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with FanDuel Casino. It’s just not at the same level of priority as some of parent company Flutter’s other assets. FanDuel Sportsbook and PokerStars are hard acts to follow, and FanDuel Casino does not bend over backwards in that effort.

Every game on FanDuel Casino is high quality, from its slots to its multiple table games. Most of the slots onsite are extremely popular titles, like Da Vinci Diamonds or Lobstermania 2. There are several different table games, including some presentations where the game offers a first-person perspective. Unfortunately, it’s probably not going to be enough to wow the Mohegan Tribe after tribal members have seen what BetMGM has to offer.

How to Get Started with CT Online Casinos

No matter which apps end up launching in Connecticut, the procedure you’ll have to undergo in order to play will be roughly the same. Every online casino site has required players to proceed through the following steps (in order):

  • Download
  • Register
  • Deposit
  • Play

The first step is the obvious one. You’ll need to download the app onto your iPhone or Android phone or tablet. You can also visit the casino website through your computer (if you plan to use one). Before you leave, make sure to grab any bonus codes you see above and click through to head to the online casino app.

Any registration or first-time deposit bonuses will either require a promotional code or a click through one of our links to be active. Once you reach the download screen, you should be in familiar territory. Simply download the app as you do any other type of app, and let it install automatically.

The next part of the process is to register for a new account. Look for the large button in the top of the display or screen that’s marked “Join us,” “Sign up,” “Get Started,” or “Register for an account.” It should be around the upper right portion of your screen. Once you press this button, you’ll visit the registration screen for the site, which is where you create an account.

Be prepared to input various bits of personal data, like your name, your email address, your home address, your telephone number, your date of birth, and your Social Security number. Also, make sure to write any bonus code in the appropriate box.

After you register, you’ll probably need to get some money onto the site to play. Look for a different button in the same region that says “Register,” “Sign-up,” or something similar. Once you press the button, you’ll be on the deposit page or cashier for your app of choice. Each online casino app will feature a different selection of deposit methods, but most of the time, you’ll be able to find something that works.

Once the deposit is credited to your account, then it’s time to play. Pick out a game from the list and get going. Each game is regulated and certified by its respective state regulators, so don’t be afraid to let the gaming regulators know if something isn’t working.

USPoker does not promote play on any unregulated, unlicensed, or offshore site. After you play, you can keep whatever you’ve won in your onsite account or (assuming you’re over the minimum) withdraw it to your financial institution of choice.

New Connecticut Online Poker Sites

Connecticut residents will soon be able to play real money online poker with one another, too. HB 6451, the law which made sports betting and online casinos a reality for Connecticut, also included provisions for poker. So, for Connecticut fans of online Texas hold’em, online pot-limit Omaha, and other games on the felt, things are most definitely looking brighter.

Now, in terms of which poker sites are expected to launch in Connecticut, the situation is much less clear than it is for online casinos. While DraftKings is almost certainly the online casino partner for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, DraftKings does not have its own online poker site at this time. So, if the owners of Foxwoods want to offer an online poker app, they’ve got a bit of a conundrum on their hands.

The other issue is that poker’s need for constant refreshing of its pool of players means that a smaller state like Connecticut might struggle to provide enough activity for an online poker app to stay in business. Connecticut lawmakers are likely going to have to pursue membership in the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA) if they want the state to be appealing for poker apps.

MSIGA membership would allow Connecticut to combine its pools with those in other legal poker states, including New Jersey poker sites, Nevada poker sites, and Delaware poker sites. Bigger player pools, including online poker sites in Michigan and online poker sites in Pennsylvania, are also expected to join MSIGA at some point in the future, which would further strengthen the arrangement and overall size of the pool.

The bottom line is that online poker in Connecticut will be a more complicated launch than online casinos. Since it is usually third in terms of profitability, we could easily see a launch come after online casinos get underway. Online poker in Connecticut is probably more likely in mid-to-late 2022.

Here are the poker apps that might be on the way.

BetMGM Poker

BetMGM Poker is probably the most likely poker brand that you will see in Connecticut. Parent company ROAR Digital, a joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain, is emerging as one of the favorites to gain access to Connecticut iGaming through the Mohegan Tribe’s license. BetMGM might not be a familiar brand to most online poker players, but its corporate forebear, partypoker, certainly is.

The site offers both limit and no-limit or pot-limit versions of Texas hold’em, Omaha, and seven card stud. If it comes to Connecticut poker players, will be able to compete for tens of thousands of dollars in tournament guarantees every single week.

PokerStars

PokerStars is one of the top poker sites in the world, full stop. There are no American poker sites that can challenge “Stars” for its sheer volume and reach in the poker world, and only GGPoker is in the same league worldwide. PokerStars has every buy-in level and game format that you can imagine.

In addition to the traditional games, Stars even offers some custom variants of its own design. Unfortunately, PokerStars is a part of Flutter Entertainment, which is the same company that owns FanDuel. Thus, though PokerStars would be an unquestionable coup for the residents of Connecticut to enjoy, it is less likely to make a Nutmeg State appearance because of the limited options for partnerships.

DraftKings Poker

Discussion about DraftKings Poker is an odd thing for a very simple reason – DraftKings Poker does not exist. In fact, it’s not even certain that DraftKings Poker ever will exist. However, there are a couple of factors that suggest a poker product from the DFS titan might be in the offing. First of all, DraftKings has quite a financial incentive to figure out a poker brand for its deal with the Mashantucket Pequots. ]

Although DK has a market access deal in place with Foxwoods, it’s still not in the bag that the tribe will turn to the company in black and green for its iGaming suite. Secondly, there have been multiple rumors that DraftKings is considering either the development or purchase of an online poker platform, and DK’s recent taking of $1 billion in new debt leaves it in prime position to jump into online poker with both feet.

Other possible real money poker apps

One notable exception to this list is WSOP.com. No other online poker site has managed to take advantage of MSIGA and pool its liquidity across state lines. However, WSOP.com remains the property of Caesars Entertainment, which has no momentum in Connecticut at the moment. So, unless Connecticut lawmakers make the state’s inclusion into MSIGA a priority, there’s no reason for either Caesars or the tribes to go out of their way for WSOP.com.

Other real money poker apps that are possible, if unlikely, to launch in Connecticut are the following:

Connecticut Online Casino Timeline

Online casinos have been a topic of discussion in the Connecticut General Assembly and the Office of the Governor for many years. Then-Gov. Dannel Malloy called online gambling in Connecticut “inevitable” in a January 2012 Associated Press story, and the issue has continued to resurface from time to time since then.

After the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting, it became clearer that the path forward for Connecticut involved full-service iGaming legislation that incorporated sports betting, online poker, and online casinos. So, here is a quick rundown of all the key dates in 2021 that led to Connecticut’s passage of an omnibus online gambling law.

January 14, 2021 – Connecticut legislators file SB146 to legalize online casinos and sports betting in the state. While this bill does not prove to have the longevity for a run through the Assembly, it indicates strongly that support for a multi-tiered iGaming bill is growing in Connecticut’s legislative body.

February 11, 2021 – Gov. Ned Lamont, who has been advocating for sports betting to come to Connecticut for more than a year, includes iGaming as a portion of the revenue in his budget proposal. He also files a bill that would allow the amendment of the state’s compacts with the tribes in order to offer online casinos, online poker, and sports betting. This bill is the earliest incarnation of HB6451, which ends up being the enabling legislation for Connecticut iGaming.

March 18, 2021 – Lamont and the Mashantucket Pequot tribe agree on terms for changing the tribe’s compact with the state. The agreement took some finagling on the part of the governor, who had irritated tribal leaders by reaching a deal with the Mohegans two weeks prior. However, all’s well that ends well, and both of Connecticut’s tribes figured to play a major role in the expansion of online casinos into the Nutmeg State.

May 27, 2021 – Lamont signs off on HB6451 two days after it passes the Connecticut Senate, making online casino play a legal activity in the state. The bill proceeded through its final vote handily, with the Senate approving it by a 28 – 6 margin. The House, for its part, passed HB6451 a week before the Senate with 122 members voting aye to 21 nays. Now, all that stands between the people of Connecticut and online casinos is the US Department of the Interior, which must approve the amended compacts before the tribes and the state can proceed.

CT Online Casinos FAQ

Who will be allowed to play on Connecticut online casino apps?

Anyone over the age of 21 and physically inside of Connecticut will be able to play on its online casinos.

Do I have to live in Connecticut to play at Connecticut online casinos?

No. It is unnecessary for you to be a resident of Connecticut in order to play on its online casino apps. Whether you are visiting the state in earnest or just slipping across the border to place a few wagers, it is not a requirement that you show proof of residency in the Nutmeg State to gain access.

Do I have to be inside Connecticut to play?

Yes. You will have to verify that you are physically located inside Connecticut’s state lines before you will be permitted to play online casino games in Connecticut. State law prohibits playing online casino games across state lines.

How do casino apps track your location?

Every casino app will maintain and use geolocation verification software in order to pinpoint your location when you log onto the app. The software will use your device’s onboard global positioning system to place you accurately in your location. If you are outside of Connecticut or the system cannot verify your location inside the Nutmeg State, you will not be permitted to make a single wager.

What are the safest Connecticut Casino sites?

The safest CT casino sites are the ones owned, operated, and managed by the two Connecticut Native American tribes, the Mashantucket Pequots and the Mohegans. You should be able to find references to the apps in question within the tribes’ literature and on the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection’s website, either through explicit references or financial disclosures. If you cannot find the site that you’re investigating in an official document, it’s probably not safe.

Do I need to sign up in person at a Connecticut casino?

No. You can sign up for a casino, poker, or sportsbook account remotely. As long as you have a viable internet connection, you can begin the process anywhere inside state lines, no matter how out-of-town you might be.

Can I bet on sports and play poker on the same app?

It depends on the app, but almost certainly. Most major gaming operators, like those likely to come to Connecticut, have integrated sites that permit easy switching back and forth between different types of games. In most cases, your account wallet will follow you wherever you go on the site, and you’ll only have to click on a tab at the top of the display to visit the pages for different types of gambling.
